We analyzed 177 real product launches submitted to The Runway between May 6, 2026 and August 11, 2026. Here is what indie founders are actually building, shipping, and naming in 2026 — from first-party data, not a survey.
The AI / ML category is the single biggest at 24% of launches. But that undercounts AI's real footprint: 39% of all launches — across every category — describe themselves using AI language (AI, GPT, LLM, agents, generative, and similar). In 2026, AI is less a vertical than a default ingredient founders reach for, whether they are building a fintech tool, a creator app, or a productivity utility.
Nearly 2 in 5 indie launches now position around AI in some form. The gap between the 24% “AI category” and the 39% “AI-mentioning” is the story: AI has diffused into everything.
Beyond AI, the category mix skews heavily toward software, tools, and content creation. SaaS, Productivity, Developer Tools, and Creator Tools together form the backbone of the indie launch economy.
The prevailing launch advice says to build a waitlist and tease before you ship. Indie founders are doing the opposite: 92% of launches were already live and usable when listed, versus just 8% in a pre-launch, beta, or coming-soon stage. The modern indie playbook is to ship something real, then launch it — not to launch the promise.
For decades a .com was the default. Not anymore: only 47% of these launches use a .com. The other 53% reach for newer extensions — .app, .ai, .io, .dev — that read as native to software and often let founders get the exact name they want.
Across every tagline in the dataset, the single most common word is free. A full 25% of launches put “free” directly in their pitch — more than any feature, category, or benefit. In a market where founders are tired of paywalls, free is not just a price. It is positioning.
The most common value-proposition words founders use in their taglines:
Submissions to The Runway have grown month over month with essentially no paid marketing — evidence that founders are actively seeking free, permanent places to launch. The monthly cadence of launches in this dataset:
This report is built from first-party data: every product submitted to LaunchFree.io (The Runway), a free, human-reviewed launch directory, between May 6, 2026 and August 11, 2026. The sample is 177 launches. Category and stage are self-reported by founders at submission and verified in review; AI adoption is measured by language used in each launch's name, tagline, and description; domain data is derived from each launch's live URL. Percentages are rounded. This is a young, growing dataset — we will refresh this report as the sample expands.
